Barbara Goda, author of Ladies of Readingtown, Volumes I & II, Trustee of the HSBC, a retired history teacher, having taught for 30 years in the public schools of Berks County. Her interest in women’s history began long before retirement as she tried to incorporate more information on women in her classes. Currently Barbara lectures on a variety of topics including China and Russia, and publishes articles in historical and travel magazines.
Linda Eaton, Curator of Textiles, Winterthur Museum. Consultation for the White House, United States Capitol and the Park Houses of Philadelphia. Recently published articles, “Needlework Samplers,” and “Needlework Pictures,” in The Encyclopedia of American Folk Art, 2004. Curator of current exhibition at Winterthur (closes July 2006), “Needles and Haystacks: Pastoral Imagery in American Needlework.”
Trish Herr, independent scholar living in neighboring Lancaster County, specializes in the decorative arts, textiles and needlework of Pennsylvania. Her activities in the museum field include serving as Guest Curator for exhibits at the Heritage Center of Lancaster County on quilts and coverlets, Lancaster County academic needlework 1790-1860 and needlework of the Lititz Moravian Girls School.
Charles and Tandy Hersh, authors of Samplers of the Pennsylvania Germans. Tandy is a weaver, researcher, writer and lecturer about PA German textiles. Charles is a retired college professor, weaver, and descendant of PA German pioneers of Lancaster County.
Kathryn Lesieur, Guest Curator, descendant of Jacob and Valentine Griesemer, early settlers of Berks County. Long time collector of Pennsylvania samplers, Kathryn has spent the last 5 years researching Berks County samplers after obtaining her first locally made piece.
Candace Kintzer Perry, Curator of Collections of the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center, is a native of Robesonia in western Berks County. Candace has a lifelong interest in PA German culture and heritage, motivating her to attain an MA in American Studies and Museum Studies from Duquesne University.
Kathleen Staples, Greenville, SC, owner of Curious Works Press, Curator of current exhibit on Southern girlhood embroidery at the Charleston Museum, Editorial Advisor, Sampler and Antique Needlework Quarterly. A well-known name in the sampler world, Kathleen has written more than 50 articles ranging from topics on the European tradition, sewing accessories and German influences.
Joyce and Bill Subjack, Americana dealers and collectors specializing in American schoolgirl needlework. Currently, they are writing a book about samplers, entitled, “Sampling America,” and will emphasize “the stories behind the samplers.”
Lynn Tinley, third year graduate student in the Institute of Liberal Arts at Emory University, working toward PhD in American Studies. Her area of study is the influence of religion on early modern textiles, with research focused primarily on Quaker samplers and the influence of Quaker doctrine and practices on their style and motifs.
