tomorrow....Saturday, June 23rd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
(Rain date is the next day....Sunday, June 24th)
10 specially prepared garden-sites are open to the public
Seminars offered by Master Gardeners, as part of the
tour aggenda, will be presented in the Historical
Society's air-conditioned Hendel House---at Centre Ave.
and Douglass---directly opposite Centre Park.
A 45-minute walking tour will be offered by Master
Gardners at Charles Evans Cemetery. Emphasis
will be on the trees and plantings found there. Over
the years, a special effort was made by Cemetery officials
to plant a wide variety of greenery, some rather exotic.
A scavenger hunt for kids will also be conducted, as part
of the official Centre Park Garden Tour offering.
One of the ten garden-sites open to those who tour
is the one pictured below, at the Oley St. residence of
Society member Jack Seidel. The home here was for
many years the residence of Berks historian J.
Bennett Nolan, Esq., who passed away 40 years ago.

BYNDEN WOOD concerts start Tuesday, June 26, at 7--above Wernersville
3- The Reading Musical Foundation and South Mountain
YMCA's Bynden Wood concert series starts this coming
TUESDAY at 7.
Bring a folding chair.

This well-known free outdoor concert series started
nearly 50 years ago. The late William E. Maier, a
musician's musician and well-known bakery owner,
was much involved for decades. Not incidentally, Mr.
Maier was a member of the Historical Society of Berks
County.
The featured artist for Tuesday's concert is Berks
soprano Tamara Black, without a doubt, one of the
leading vocalists now living within our county.
She has appeared widely in opera and on the
concert stage. She has appeared at Carnegie Hall.
In case of bad weather, the concert moves to the
Conrad Weiser H. S. auditorium.

PATRIOT DAY at the Society - Sat., July 7 at 10 a.m.
4- The PATRIOT DAY program, which runs about an hour,
is divided into two segments.
First off, your News-Bits editor will give a brief overview
of old-time Fourth of July as celebrated in Reading
and Berks.

Then, Society Trustee Paul Troutman will demonstrate
and "work" his wonderful toy-cannon collection. Needless
to say, he keeps his cask of black powder at a safe
distance!
You're guaranteed to get a bang out of the proceedings!
DO bring your kids or grandchildren to this event.
They will love it!
Those who'd like to get involved will get a chance
to participate in some of the milder demonstrations.

Great News about the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower at Mt. Penn, above Rdg.
6- Spayd's Nursery has started to do Inlay-Tile work that
will embellish the front walkway to the Tower.
It will be a 7' x 5' Silhouette of Wm. Penn, dressed as a
Quaker, holding the Pennsylvania Charter.
Laying this tile is a rare skill and will be supervised by
Charlie Cappel, of Stony Creek, along with Mike Spayd,
who were the mastermind's behind the tile work at the
"Grotto," which is a memorial used for prayer, located
on the right side of St Catherine's of Sienna Church,
Exeter Twp.
The tile work will add to the intrigue and charm of our
unique Fire Tower, along with our "New Smokey Bear
Fire Danger" sign constructed by Carl Doaty of DCNR.
Please stop by the Tower to see what's happening.
Pagoda-Skyline Inc. is continuing its quest to restore
the Fire Tower to make it a destination-site well worth
a visit by tourists to Reading and Berks.
We are currently looking for an architect or designer
to help with a plan for the park area and a lighting
package.
We thank you for your continued support with our project.
