1- Tonight is the Historical Society’s monthly BCTV program.
Our guest for this program is Society Trustee and author of a
shelf of railroad books, Benjamin L. Bernhart.

Ben is appearing to discuss his latest publication…
”Pennsylvania Railroad in the Schuylkill River Valley.”

This book is now available at the Historical Society museum/
gift shop. More information on this volume is forthcoming--
in a few days.

As this is late notice, be aware this program repeats this
coming Friday evening at 10 p.m. …. Saturday at 6 p.m. …..
and Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

You who live beyond the cable area can watch the program by

2- Herewith is a printed notice of the upcoming summer craft
workshops for kids 7 to 14. Each session is a bargain at $4.
These workshops are open to anyone interested…but be
apprised they fill up quickly due to their popularity.

3- Dave Remaley, a Kutztown history buff and postcard
colledtor, and your editor have made a number of fieldtrips
to the hinterlands of Berks to photograph historical sites and
to gather information destined for “The Passing Scene—
Volume 14,” due out in November.

Thus far, we have not been able to definitively locate the
one-room Molltown (stone) schoolhouse, in use from
1849 to around 1928…..in Maidencreek Township.

According to an 1876 map, it stood back from “main street,”
just up to road from the village’s former general store—now
an apartment-type house.

Can any reader shed light on this matter?

============== =============== =============

4- And while we’re dealing with mysteries, here are three
Amity Township views (the last one might be Oley) that we
cannot pinpoint as to present-day location.

The views date from around 1910.

Again, can any reader provide information?

5- Reminder that the annual Book Bonanza will take place
at the Leesport Market (north end of Leesport) July 14 to 16—
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

6- More about Fies Tavern, located in Alsace Twp., along
Antietam Road….not far from Spies Church and Alsace
School…

8- Deanna Wahler ( 610 - 285 - 4730 ) informs us
that the Albany Twp. Historical Society has just
published a PA Dutch Cookbook. It’s the second
one the group has produced.

Titled “Folk Art and Foodways of the PA Dutch,"
it was inspired by their experience working in the
Summer Kitchen at last year’s Kutztown PA Folk
Festival.

It's a colorful 7x10, 96-page book with a laminated
hardcover, and filled with 115 recipes, reflecting
the traditional dishes of the Pennsylvania Dutch,
as well as modern selections, adapted using
ingredients associated with Pennsylvania Dutch
cookery.

The cookbook is organized according to the
seasons and includes thirteen full-color plates of
paintings created by local artist, Gladys Lutz, now
age 97, that document the food traditions of PA
Dutch ancestors.

Miss Lutz’s recollections of life on the farm
accompany the paintingsand further explain the local
traditions of food preparation on the rural PA
farms of long ago. To view the book cover art work,
visit the General Store page of the ATHS website.....
www.albanyths.org.

The cookbook is available for purchase at the Summer
Kitchen during the Kutztown Folk Festival, July 1st
through July 9th. The cost is $25 plus tax. It is also
available by mail for $31, (includes shipping via priority
mail).

To order by mail, send a note card with your name,
mailing address, and phone number---along with a
check made payable to Albany Township Historical
Society---and mail to Albany Township Historical Society,
PO Box 95, Kempton, PA 19529. Please allow several
weeks for delivery.
