FOUR News-Bits of Reading-Berks historical interest... =============================== ======================= =============================== ======================= =============================== ======================= 1- WEDNESDAY, June 7th - Historical Society's BCTV program 2- Vote for Reading's finest Beautiful Downtown Buildings 3- Marathon bike race in Reading this Thursday affects Society 4- HELP! What is being done in this 1897 mystery picture? =============================== ======================== =============================== ======================== =============================== ======================== 1- Wednesday, June 7, at 7 p.m. is the Historical Society's monthly BCTV program. Included will be some photos destinned for inclusion in the upcoming PASSING SCENE--Vol. 14, due out this coming November. Karl Graybill, Executive Director of Reading's Downtown Improvement District (DID), will appear as a guest to discuss the upcoming "select four great buildings of downtown Reading" nomination process. There is a possible 2nd guest scheduled.... ============================= ============================ 2- Here is the instruction and nomination ballet. YOU are asked to put in your proverbial "two cents" and vote for outstanding buildings in downtown Reading. Voting is FREE....but only vote ONCE! Print out the bottom of this sheet and mail it to the address given.
================================== ====================== 3- This THURSDAY (June 8th), Reading will be hosting a major bicycle race through the downtown area and out to Charles Evans Cemetery. This is a really special event that is expected to draw an impressive number of spectators. This is being mentioned to alert potential visitors to Society headquarters on Thursday that access to the building might require creative planning to reach the buidling. It is said that crutial intersections will be opened from time to time. ============================== ======================== 4- Below is a particularly interesting photo made available by Rev. Willis Heckler of Topton, a keen student of local history. The picture was taken in 1897 by Rev. Alfred J. Herman, pastor of Maxatawny Reformed Church. WHAT is being done in this view?
Your editor has shown the photo to a representative number of old timers reared "in the country." The only point of agreement is confusion! Some recalled seeing a gizmo such as the fellow with the derby is using but couldn't be sure what it did.... Note that the large kettle on the left has no fire beneath it... If only we could get a clearer view of what the woman is paring. ANYONE of you 3,100 New-Bits readers know what's happening? If so, kindly respond to gmmix@epix.net Thank you! ============================ ========================== ============================ GMMIX =================END |
