TWO News-Bits of Reading-Berks historical interest... ======================= ===================== ======================= ===================== 1- WEDNESDAY (May 17) at 7 - very important preservation mtg. 2- Century-old photo of a Reading store on Greenwich St., Rdg. ======================== =================== ======================== =================== 1- CRITICAL REMINDER! VERY IMPORTANT Berks County Historic Preservation Meeting - WED., May 17th, at 7 p.m. at the Historical Society of Berks County of Berks, 940 Centre Ave., Rdg. The Berks County Planning Commission, as a part of the Open Space and Recreation Plan, is mapping and developing an INVENTORY of historical buildings. This is a CRITICAL first step in creating zoning ordinances to protect these assets. Zoning and land use decisions are made at the local government level, but there are measures that can be taken so that informed decisions can be made and communities can work cooperatively to save the historical assets they wish to preserve. You will be provided with maps of your area and a folder of information. ALL of the historical preservation and land use/ conservation organizations in the county are asked to participate in this effort. Please feel free to bring several representatives from your organization to attend this meeting. Local News-Bits readers are invited to attend this important meeting. ========================================= 2- Jack Yetzer of the Bernville area called our attention to an unidentified, century-old albumen print of a Reading grocery store that appeared on eBay recently. The damage visible on the photo probably was brought about through storage in dampness, which often results in surface deterioration (powdering) on albumen prints, which have egg whites as their emulsion base. Once the surface begins to powder, there is little that can be done to stabilize the photo. Your editor doctored the view make it more presentable.
Reading Fire Chief William H. Rehr III studied the picture at length and finally determined its location. He notes as his main clue the trolley track seen at the bottom. ====================== ====================== ====================== GMMIX ============END |
