The topic of the day deals with a farmstead on Amity Park Road. Part of the farmhouse on the property dates to the French and Indian War period. ============= ============== ============== 3- Be aware the Historical Society of Berks County’s exceedingly popular TOY EXHIBIT will be closing at 4 p.m. NEXT Saturday, April1st. It will NOT be held over. The Toy Exhibit may be viewed today AND next Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are in excess of 1,000 vintage on exhibit. This has been one of the most popular exhibits the Society has ever mounted….and we’ve had some blockbusters within the last 5 or 6 years. =============== =============== ============ 4- Our recent visit to the Keith Haring exhibit at the Reading Museum proved most interesting on several fronts. For those from out the area, be apprised Keith Haring (1958-1990) was born and educated at Kutztown. He went on to great fame as a pop artist in the Big Apple.
Three points come to mind in regard to our recent tour of the Museum’s exhibit…. (1) DO see the Haring video-bio being shown in the exhibit gallery. It’s very informative and gives the viewer a background to get the most from the exhibit. Yours truly found it a revelation. (2) Don’t miss the 8 by 10-ish rendering of the map of Berks County executed for the U.S. Bicentennial art-competition exhibit held at the Museum in 1976. The map is truly an incredibly intricate and masterful work of art. Impressive in the extreme. And maybe you want to view bits of it using the magnifying glass hanging by its side. (3) Included in the exhibit are photographs of Haring and friends taken by an Oriental photographer, obviously a Haring associate. These prints are EXTRAORDINARY. I’ve never seen finer black and white photographs anywhere. Stunning tonal range…from snow white to coal black. Yours truly spent countless hours in the darkroom—between 1949 and 1999—and never achieved anything close to that which the aforementioned photographer produced. ============== =============== =============== 5- Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 30th, at 3 p.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Waverly and Brobst sts., Shillington. The event is the Festival of Berks Choral Compositions, a concert of music by six Berks County composers. Included is a Mariachi Mass! More information will follow….. ================ =============== ================ 6- The Ringgold Band's 154th Anniversary Spring Concert will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2006, at 3 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in West Reading, PA. Come hear an original composition commissioned for the band by the Reading Musical Foundation to honor conductor James Seidel's 25 years as conductor. Also featured will be trumpet soloist, Kenneth Laudermilch, and a return visit by the return of the band's friend and special guest conductor, Loras John Schissel. Tickets may be purchased at the door. ================= ============= ============= ================= GMMIX ======= == END ====== |
