1- Berks County Postcard Club to meet today (THURSDAY),
Jan.19th --- at 7 p.m. --- at headquarters of the Fleetwood

complex opposite the church. Convenient parking is available

2- Sharon MacInnes < smacinnes@cox.net > forwarded this
note:

Ancestor Tracks (www.ancestortracks.com) has just posted
images of each township from an 1860 map of Berks Co.
located in the Library of Congress.

Click on
http://ancestortracks.com/berks_blurb.html and

scroll down the page to find links to each township.
The images are large and will take time to load if you
have a dial-up internet connection. Once they are loaded,
though, they can be enlarged by clicking on them, plus
they may be saved to your computer by right-clicking
and selecting "Save Image As..."

By the way, do you know of any sources for warrantee maps
of townships north of the Schuylkill? As you are
undoubtedly aware, the state of PA platted the loose
surveys in their possession onto county maps, but the
project was never completed. Only about ˝ of Berks
was mapped by the state, and we would like to know if
there are any other maps out there that you are aware
of before we complete our Berks Co. CD.

3- For the benefit of those living outside the immediate
Berks area, be apprised that we’ve had some nasty winds
the last few days.

The big surprise was the wind’s toppling the non-functional
aluminum steeple atop Albright College’s Chapel.

================= ================ =============

4- An email just arrived from our reliable Blandon
photographer-reporter that stated…..

“The southeast corner of 222 and 662, site of Kroner’s tire
shop and the old dinner, will be torn down.

“Mente bought the 14 acres to put in a new auto show-room. ”

5- The Southern Berks News for Jan. 18th-- available
gratis at numerous stores in Exeter, Amity, Robeson, etc. --
contains a number of interesting illustrated features.

News writer Doug Wesner produced a well-written full-page
feature on The Passing Scene—Vol. 13….with three huge
photos, one in color. This is on page 11.

Of equal interest is an article by Andrew McCue on page 3
(with two photos) about rebuilding the 37th Street Reiffton
Trolley shelter which was severely damaged last Fall by
an errant vehicle. Fortunately, the driver’s insurance is
paying the bill for the reconstruction.

This 75-year-old landmark along Perkiomen Ave. has been
maintained splendid by the Women’s Club of Reiffton for
years.

Historic-building restoration contractor, Charlie Miller,
is overseeing the restoration. Charlie, a good friend of
local history, is president of the Amith Historical Society.
Charlie Miller is the fellow standing on the left....

In the same issue of Southern Berks News is a major feature
detailing Exeter Twp.’s purchase of the Reading County
Club, a move that was well received by residents of the area.

================== =============== ===============

6- Newspapers reported in full the recent fire at the
erstwhile tannery at Fleetwood. History buffs are
painfully aware that the buildings were part of the
famous Fleetwood Auto Body plant that once made the
Fleetwood Cadillac body.

Last weekend, these photos were taken at the site……
