Soc. trip to Caramoor, historic John Jay Homestead in NY 7- Beidler House & Mill "living history Sun." at Gibraltar - June 8 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 1- The Society's monthly BCTV show is WEDNESDAY, June 4th at 7 p.m. Bruce Hoffman guests to show and narrate slides on old Birdsboro (part 2). Also, more old-time views of Laureldale to commemorate the borough's upcoming anniversary. An interesting panel of guests will appear. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 2- Our monthly FIRST THURSDAY program for this THURSDAY, June 5th, at 8:30 a.m., is titled "Baseball in Reading." WEEU radio's popular entertainer, Charlie Adams, will be the speaker. Mr. Adams, a longtime trustee of the Historical Society, has just completed a wonderful new book on this subject which, I'm sure, he'll autograph for those who ask! NOTE: Mr. Adams completes his radio program at 9. Expect him to charge through the door around 9:12! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 3- We sincerely regret the sudden passing of Hilda Larese of McKnight St., who died at age 87 on May 29th. For some 15 years, Hilda was in the library of the Society, once a week, to work on old written records. As she was educated in Germany during the period handwritten German script was still being taught in the schools (prior to 1933), she was our one-and-only resident German-script translator. Many can read printed German script. FEW can plough through old hand-written manuscripts. She is survived by son Hans of Mertztown and three daughters: Elsa Rothenberger and Johanna Hartman of Reading, and Gretel Ortiz of Fleetwood. A sister, Emme Maurer, lives in Neuenberg, Germany. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 4- Earl D. Brown of South Temple and latterly of the Lutheran Home at Topton died May 27th at age 88. He was best known as a local musician. He played trumpet for many years with the Three J's Band---and also with the Ringgold Band and the Centerport Band. He is survived by wife Jane Heintz- Brown, son Dennis of Exeter Twp., and daughter Melanie Kohout of Temple. Another daughter, Linda Weissman, lives in Jenkintown. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 5- Anna May High, age 70, died May 26th, in Chester County. For 20 years she was an instructor, in nursing, at Reading Hospital School of Nursing---and for 13 years taught nursing at Reading Area Community College. Most recently, she continued to teach at Brandywine School of Nursing---until 1995. She was born in Womelsdorf, graduated from Shillington High, earned a BS at Albright, and received a master's in nursing from U. of P. Locally, a sister survives her: Pauline Doerrman of Reading. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 6.
