Attractions of the Centre Park Historic District and 17 Berks County historical societies are the focus. Everything is FREE! At 1 p.m. Saturday, Matt Barnhart will present a talk on "Berks County's Rich Architectural Heritage" at the Society's Hendel Mansion, Centre Ave. and Douglass St., directly across from Centre Park. At 1 p.m. Sunday, Geo. M. Meiser, IX will present an illustrated talk: "Here and There in Old-Time Berks" in the Hendel Mansion. At 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday there will be walking tours of the historic district. Meet at Hendel Mansion. Inside the Historical Society's headquarters at 940 Centre Ave., 17 Berks historical societies will have representative displays well worth seeing. At noon on both days, talks will be given on the 2nd floor of our headquarters. At 3 p.m. on both days talks will be given on the 2nd floor. Penn Memorial Fire Tower, which will be open that day. Dinners are $ 7. This is a genuinely worthwhile cause. They need your support! \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 3- County-wide used book collection for Book Bonanza 2003 will be held Saturday, May 3, at the Reading Regional Airport, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adult and children's hardback and paperback books are needed. The Book Bonanza provides funds for scholarships for women and the Berks Libraries' Summer Reading Program for Kids. Huber, proprietor of "Past Perspectives," a unique historic and cultural resource company, appears at the Society to conduct a workshop:-- DISCOVER WHEN YOUR HOUSE WAS BUILT AND WHO BUILT IT. Mr. Huber has dealt with this topic for some 40 years and has exceptional expertise in providing tips on determining the age of houses and other types of buildings. The Society is fortunate to have been able to obtain his services for this one-time workshop. Cost is only $5, which includes refreshments. Pay at the door. Notated along the negative's edge is "Mr. Lester Sassaman." Does anyone know the exact location? ![]() \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 6- The Society's monthly BCTV program promises to be a lively one, on WEDNESDAY, May 7th at 7 p.m. Paul and Kathy Miller, luminaries of the Historical Society of Sinking Spring are the hosts. Among their guests is Ed Taggert, author of the popular new book, "Booklegger: Max Hassel, the Millionaire Newsboy." His slide show deals with "Basketmakers of the Oley Hills of Berks County." See Milt Lorah, Freddie Bieber, Ollie Strasser, Jonas Day, and others…and their split-oak and willow baskets. Pictured here is Thomas Stahl who died in 1942. His brother Isaac continued the business until his death in 1950. Isaac's son Russell, who made an effort to learn the craft, died in recent years. ![]() \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 9- On Saturday, May 10th, and Sunday, May 11, from 1 to 4 both days, the Fleetwood Area Historical Society is hosting an Open House at its headquarters in the historic schoolhouse at 110 West Arch St., Fleetwood. A major effort was required to move the collections to the basement level of the building. If you have never seen their holdings, be apprised there is a great deal of worthwhile memorabilia to see.
