Choral Society offers patriotic program THIS Friday 5- If you change your Internet provider, NOTIFY US ========================================= 1- The Berks County Association for Graveyard Preservation seems to be reactivated. We just received the October "Epitaphs" (their newsletter), which contains valuable "private cemetery" info. The issue is devoted to the little-known St. Henry’s grave- yard, west of Route 222 beyond Moselem Springs and off Richmond Rd., Fleetwood postal area. All tombstone inscriptions are provided, along with full translations. The last burial seems to have been in 1854. The first probably preceded erection of the church. There was a Catholic mission church erected near the long-defunct Moselem mines that had a graveyard behind it. The site is now on the farm of Ethan and Anna Burkholder. Years ago, when mining ceased and the miners moved on, the church closed. In time, someone moved into the structure as a squatter. Church leaders were much annoyed and had the building razed, its stones used to put a wall around the cemetery. FYI--St. Henry is the patron saint of miners. If BCAGP is to continue, it needs your support. The organization needs membership dues ($15) and volunteers. Locals: THIS Sunday at 2 (Nov. 17th) is a general membership meeting--at the Oley Legion, Routes 73 and 662 at Oley...right near the Oley Legion diner, along DeTurk Road. Need more directions? Call Ralph Lorah at 610 - 987 - 3541. You can send dues to BCAGP at Box 3707, Reading, PA 19606. Be sure to include your email address with your $15 check. President Fran Rasweiler can be contacted at Francharas1@aol.com. (Yes, the address and email address are current and correct.) ======================================== 2- Our last News-Bits mailing mentioned Paul Drusba’s forth- coming book on Neversink Mt. , its resorts and mt. trolley. There’s been a groundswell in interest in Paul’s publication, which isn’t far off. If any of you have pertinent information or photos, kindly contact Mr. Drusba at either druzbas@surfree.com OR pdruzba@weeu.com =============================================== 3- According to last Saturday’s Eagle, the congregation of Holy Cross United Methodist Church, 333 North 5th St., Reading, decided not to vacate its magnificent edifice. Plans were to build a new church along the Boyertown Pike in Exeter Twp. and then depart the congregation’s current 1893 building which is one of the three or four finest in the city. We applaud that decision! =============================================== 4- The Reading Choral Society opens its 128th season with a concert on Friday, November 15 at 8:00 PM in the Lincoln Plaza Hotel Ballroom. The RCS sings a salute to America combining poetry and music in celebration of our country. The highlight of the concert is Howard Hanson's "Song of Democracy" set to the poetry of Walt Whitman. Joined by the Albright College Choir, the concert also features American patriotic songs, folksongs and spirituals. Tickets can be purchased by calling TICKETS at 610-796-9001. =============================================== 5- If you change your Internet provider, kindly notify us. It appears many of you are converting to providers that offer wideband/DSL service. If so, don't forget to contact us. Thanks! =========== gmmix ============= end =============== |
