FOUR News-Bits of Reading-Berks historical
interest.... ================================= 1- Historically significant 219-year-old site bulldozed into oblivion 2- Berks historical web-site worth checking, perhaps printing out 3- Historical Society’s colorful/informative AUCTION 250 web-site 4- Bernville’s Historical/Cultural Day Saturday, Aug. 24 ==================================== 1- It’s is truly tragic that the remaining Hessian Camp terraces have just been bull-dozed away. Until a week or two ago, these terraces, created by the Hessian prisoners 219 years ago for planting crops, could still be seen. They were especially evident during the winter when the vegetation was down and there was a light sprinkling of snow. The two-acre location was one of those places that was difficult to photograph because of all the trees-- but when you went there and looked up, moving your head from left to right, you could clearly see the the terracing. The site will be used for building a house. Maybe two? The location is above the west end of Lindbergh Viadult, off the west side of Hessian Road beween 1813 and 1913 STEUBEN ROAD. Hessian Road is the street that connects the west end of the Lindbergh Viaduct with Hill Road. For a map and more information on Hessian Camp, see THE PASSING SCENE--Vol. 11, pages 113 to 118. ================================== 2- A regular reader of these emails informed us that there’s a web-site on Berks history, including cemeteries and related matters, that would probably be of some interest to you. Here it is: www.horseshoe.cc/pennadutch/places/pennsylvania/berksco/berks.htm ==================================== 3- Details of the Historical Society’s Berks 2-5-0 Auction have been put on a special web-site that lists most of the items that will be up for bidding in about 12 weeks. There are fine photos included. Those living distant from Berks can bid on goods as it is planned to have phone lines available the day of the auction. Check the web-site: http://www.berks250auction.org =============================== 4- On Saturday, August 24, there will be a big day in Bernville with Bernville-history-related goods available.
