BOOK REVIEW....of Berks County history interest.....

=====================================

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF COMMITMENT TO COMMUNICATION
SERVICES--1902-2002; 326 pages; 250+ illustrations;
hardcover; 8.5 by 11 inches; published by Marie E. Cutman.
Copies, at $36.80 tax included and postpaid, are available
from Miss Cutman, P.O. Box 22, Morgantown, PA 19543.
Books may be obtained at her Morgantown home at $31.80.

Marie Cutman, a previously-published author who retired
from the Twin Valley School District after some 30 years of
dedicated service, was chosen by the directors of the erstwhile
Conestoga Telephone & Telegraph Co. to compile a chronological
and comprehensive history of their enterprise. After three years of
poring through stockholder reports, scrapbooks, newspaper
clippings, and miscellaneous files and photos, she finished this
mightily impressive tome in time for the final stockholder meeting
of Conestoga Enterprises, Inc.--on Thurs., May 23. The company
has merged with D&E (Denver and Ephrata) Communications, Inc.

While this well-crafted compilation was prepared with the
telephone interests in mind, it contains so much general history of
the Morgantown, Douglassville, Oley, Birdsboro, Plowville, etc.
area, that the contents should have wide appeal. Local history
buffs will delight in the plethora of vintage photographs, notices,
and “informative ads.”

A list of the first shareholders is included--as is an
appendix giving the names of all directors from 1902 to the present.
To Miss Cutman’s great credit, she includes an commendably
comprehensive 18-page index. Printing quality is superior.
