Reproduction and Research Service Policy

To better serve our patrons, the Henry Janssen Library offers a variety of research services. Requests are answered in the order in which it is received and as time permits. The request will be completed and mailed within the month. If the request requires more time, you will be notified.

Researchers must pay relevant fees in advance before requests can be processed.

All requests must be submitted with a self-addressed, stamped (up to $1.11 depending on the size of the request) envelope.

To better fill your requests, please include information such as: last name, first name, dates, and township.

1. Early Berks Countians

The Historical Society of Berks County Special Collection and Archive contains the original copy of the Oath of Allegiance of Berks County. Volunteers have indexed the Oath of Allegiance, as well as the Berks Countians in the Revolution. Unfortunately, these indexes are not available online. However, researchers are encouraged to submit a request and if successful the library can provide a copy of the requested information.

Early Berks Countians Fee: $15.00 per ancestor

2. Genealogical Research

The Historical Society of Berks County Special Collection and Archive contains a number of resources for genealogical research. Some of these resources include:

Our knowledgeable staff and volunteers would be happy to help search your family's history.

Genealogical Research Fee: $50.00 for one surname limited to 4 hours. Up to 10 copies will be provided for free, after 10, each copy will be $0.35*

3. Historical Research

The Historical Society of Berks County Special Collection and Archive contains a variety of resources pertaining to the history of Reading and Berks County. The Archive contains a number of Collections containing documents from local businesses, organizations and clubs. The library has numerous county histories, atlases and photographs to assist your researching needs.

Please provide us with the topic you are interested in or call for more information.

Non-Member Historical Research Fee: $25.00 deposit/1 hour

Member Historical Research Fee: $15.00 deposit/1 hour

Your deposit will be used to determine if the material is available, what is available and the time and copies it will take to complete your request.

If material is available: your deposit will be deducted from the cost and will cover the first hour of research. Additional research hours will be charged at $10.00 per hour. Researchers will also be provided with up to 10 copies for free, after 10, each copy will be $0.35.* You will be provided with a list of available materials.

If material is not available: HSBC will refund half of your deposit.

*Copies are typically $0.25 however we are including an additional $0.10 to cover the cost of additional postage needed for the request.

Researchers are asked to provide HSBC with a self-addressed envelope for all requests.
