Celebrate our Nation’s Independence as it occurred in downtown Reading in 1176 with a reenactment of the ringing of the actual courthouse bell by the decedents of Henry Vanderslice. On July 8, 1776, Reading Sheriff Henry Vanderslice rang the Berks County Court House bell at high noon, calling the people of Reading together to hear the reading of the Declaration of Independence.   Join us for a unique afternoon program with the Reading Public Library led by local dancer and dance instructor Daniel Equsquiza. Uncover Reading’s dance history and discover the new “community engagement through the arts” movement that has led to a local renaissance of dance and music centered around Latino culture, including Egusquiza’s upcoming presentation “Rosa Dances with Wolves,” which will be first presented at the Library Steps on July 29 at 12 PM. Free “ArtWalk” Community Celebration

 The Berks History Center has partnered with award-winning mural artist Michael Miller, the Wyomissing Area High School, Reading High School, and the Berks Arts Council to design and create a permanent piece of artwork that will be installed on the walkways between the Berks History Center Museum and Research Library buildings.
