Day one: Friday, October 25, 2013
We arrive at President Lincoln’s Cottage where the group will have a guided tour and some free time in the visitor center. While living at the Cottage for 13 months from 1862-1864, Lincoln regularly commuted to the White House.
Lunch will be at Union Station using a food voucher. Union Station is one of Washington's busiest and best-known places, visited by 40 million people each year and has many shops, cafes and restaurants.
This afternoon we make our way to Ford’s Theatre, traces the story of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, assassination and legacy. The Museum combines a remarkable collection of historic artifacts with a variety of interactive exhibits to tell the story of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. Using environmental recreations, videos and three-dimensional figures, the museum transports visitors to 19th-century Washington, where they can follow Lincoln from his arrival in Washington in 1861. Ford’s will deepen your appreciation and understanding of America’s 16th president.
We check into the Washington Suites in Alexandria, VA before enjoying a delicious buffet at Phillips Flagship Seafood Restaurant.
After dinner we board the coach for a night tour of the Monuments and Memorials. When the sun goes down, Washington turns into a different city. Your guide knows just the right way to show off the Capitol City at night!
Day two: Saturday, October 26, 2013
We begin the day with a hot breakfast at our hotel.
Our first visit today will be at the International Spy Museum. It is the only public museum in the United States solely dedicated to espionage and the only one in the world to provide a global perspective on an all-but-invisible profession that has shaped history and continues to have a significant impact on world events.
The Museum features the largest collection of international espionage artifacts ever placed on public display. Many of these objects are being seen by the public for the first time. These artifacts illuminate the work of famous spies and pivotal espionage actions as well as help bring to life the strategies and techniques of the men and women behind some of the most secretive espionage missions in world history.
We enjoy lunch at Tony & Joe’s Seafood Place at the Georgetown Waterfront. While enjoying your meal you have spectacular views of the Potomac River, Kennedy Center, Washington Monument, Roosevelt Island and the Key Bridge.
This afternoon we visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The Museum’s Permanent Exhibition The Holocaust spans three floors of the Museum building. It presents a narrative history using more than 900 artifacts, 70 video monitors, and four theaters that include historic film footage and eyewitness testimonies. The exhibition is divided into three parts: “Nazi Assault,” “Final Solution,” and “Last Chapter.” The narrative begins with images of death and destruction as witnessed by American soldiers during the liberation of Nazi concentration camps in 1945. We depart Washington DC after two day full of history and fun. We will make a fast food stop en route home.
